MAJOR INUIT THEATRE PRODUCTION, ACTORS NOW TOURING KIVALLIQ AND KITIKMEOT COMMUNITIES WORKING WITH YOUTH

Feb 8, 2018– IQALUIT (Canada) –The Qaggiavuut Society announces a Kivalliq and Kitikmeot youth workshop and performance tour by cast and crew members of the Inuit play Kiviuq Returns, including Inuit music, storytelling, costumes and digital design.

Kiviuq Returns is based on Inuit legends and the writing is supported by the knowledge of elders including Miriam Aglukark, Susan Avingaq, Qaunaq Mikigaq and Madeline Ivalu who are also the show’s dramaturgists.

The pan-Nunavut cast and crew are spending four weeks on tour to Rankin Inlet, Arviat, Kuglugtuk, Cambridge Bay and Kugaaruk to train youth and perform Kiviuq Returns in the communities.

“I am so happy to be touring to our own Nunavut communities with the play, bringing to the youth the songs and training them in the skills that we use in the show, like drumming, dancing and acting.” says Kiviuq Returns cast member and youth advocate for Qaggiavuut, Jerry Laisa.
“The response we had already in the Qikiqtaaluk region was an amazing experience for us performers and for the youth to experience these songs and stories was very uplifting for them.”

This year’s production of Kiviuq Returns was recently performed at the Arctic Inspiration Prize ceremony on January 31 in Ottawa and in Iqaluit on January 27, with major dates scheduled ahead in Greenland and Toronto.

The Qaggiavuut Society launched a major fundraising campaign for a Nunavut Performing Arts Centre in the summer of 2017 and continues to build partnerships and collaborative relationships hoping to make the Centre a reality by 2019.
