The Kivalliq region of Nunavut is home to the last knowledge keepers of a unique form of throat song called Qatsivaaaq. Qaggiavuut is proud to announce we will be delivering a Qatsivaat master class in Arviat this February as part of our Qaggiq School, focusing on revitalizing this ancient performing art. Qaggiavuut chairperson, Lois Suluk, is passionate about revitalizing Inuit performing arts at risk of being lost. “We’re going to bring it back”, says Ms. Suluk. “This throat song is a direct line to the elders who are our teachers. Qatsivaaq is a story told between two throat singers, it is very technical and complex with each singer telling the next line of the story. The course is part of the work of the Qaggiq School, Qaggiavuut’s programming to train Nunavut performing artists.
